Adam Blankman has been singing for as long as he can remember.
Upon receiving his first guitar at the age of six, Adam immediately
began playing incessantly and writing his own songs. A precocious
little fella, one of his first tunes began with the lyrics "We have
touched and loved each other for over twenty years..."
Because it was the '70s, Adam learned to play folk-rock songs from
John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel, and James Taylor. As he grew
older, he also began to study classical and American finger-style
guitar techniques.
Adam's Dad Noel was a jazz fan, and used to recount tales of seeing
Thelonious Monk and other jazz greats at clubs like the Five Spot in
New York. Although Adam didn't listen to a lot of jazz music as a
child, eventually he realized that jazz musicians shared his annoying
penchant for making up weird melodies to someone else's songs.
In college, Adam sang in several vocal ensembles including the Cal
Jazz Choir. This experience verified Adam's theory that if you sing 10
hideously dissonant notes into a microphone at the same time, you
can make a strangely beautiful chord that can perplex and alienate
any audience.
While studying for an economics PhD at Stanford (even more fun
than it sounds), Mr. Blankman hooked up with Roger Letson and the
renowned Vocal Flight group at De Anza College -- multiple winner of
Down Beat magazine's award for best collegiate jazz ensemble.
Adam toured Europe with Vocal Flight in 1993 and 1998, performing
at many great clubs and festivals.
From 2001-2004 Adam was a member of the Jazz Singers
Collective, singing at restaurants and nightclubs throughout the San
Francisco Bay Area. Subsequently, Mr. Blankman has been
performing locally as a solo jazz artist. He has also recorded a CD
entitled "The Gift" to document his inventive and exuberant musical
style and to commemorate the birth of his son. Stay tuned for more
information about this exciting new recording!
